Eight Smugglers Held for Murder of 49 Who Suffocated in Boat’s Hold

Desperate migrants who tried to escape suffocation in the hold of a 15-metre boat carrying 362 people were kicked in the head and pushed again below deck by people smugglers who are now under arrest in Italy.

Eight suspected people-smugglers from Libya, Morocco and Syria were arrested on Tuesday by police in Catania. They are being accused of the voluntary homicide of 49 migrants who died asphyxiated in the hull of the vessel last week.

Italian police said that according to the testimonies of survivors some of them kicked the head of migrants trying to climb out of the hold after engine fumes were suffocating people below deck.
