Suspicious Approach of Bulk Carrier off Coast of Cabo Pasado, Ecuador

May 03: At approx. 10:10 UTC two speedboats – each with five POB – reportedly approached an underway bulk carrier off the coast of Ecuador (posn. 00:08.0S – 081:19.9W; 52nm NW of Cabo Pasado). Upon observing the suspicious approach, the master raised the alarm, crew mustered, and conducted counter-piracy measures (increased speed, evasive maneuvering, and fire hoses used to spray approaching boats with water.) This successfully detered the attack, and the two speedboats aborted the attempt. All crew reported safe.
